Links to Other rat websites

All the links on this page to open into new browser windows so that you won’t be taken away from this website. If you have a rat website, please feel free to add me to your links page. Happy browsing!

  1. American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association
I have a low opinion of this organization. They decline to take a stand against the practice of culling, that is, killing baby rats that aren’t pretty enough to measure up to “show quality” standards. I personally know an AFRMA breeder who feeds her rejects to her pet snakes while they’re still alive. I’ve implored her to switch to hamsters and to pre-kill too, but she just won’t listen.
  2. The Dapper Rat
This is Al & Robyn Arthur’s website. They’re from Australia, and their site features lots of wonderful photographs, information about caring for rats, and many cute stories. Al & Robyn provided many of the photographs for this section of my website.
  3. Google search for pet rats
Search engines are a great way to find websites, and Google is my favorite. You could also try a search for fancy rats.
  4. Google search for rat rescue
If you’re planning to get another rat (New Rat Fever) you might want to adopt one from a rescue organization rather than from a pet store or a breeder. There are thousands of rats in animal shelters in the US alone. Doesn’t it make sense to help out rats who are already living, rather than encourage people to breed more? You can narrow your search results by adding the name of your state and perhaps even that of your county to the search criteria. The place names should be enclosed in straight quotes if they consist of 2 or more words. For example:
    rat rescue "Alameda County" California
  5. Grove Pashley Portraiture
Grove Pashley is an amazing portrait photographer, and he does rats as well as famous people. Robyn Arthur of The Dapper Rat says he’s the world’s greatest rat photographer, and I definitely agree. Follow the Personal link at the top of his home page to see his stupendous rat portraits.
  6. The Laboratory Rat: a natural history
This is an Oxford University documentary about lab rats released in the wild. The rats developed a thriving and complex society and adapted to their new surroundings with ease. You can order a DVD of the documentary for £18 UK funds, or a VHS tape for £15, if shipped to the US.
  7. Mousini’s Planet
This website is owned by The Girl From Mars, who now lives in Switzerland. Mousini’s Planet has hundreds of great photographs of rats. The Girl From Mars has been generous enough to let me use several photographs taken by her friends in this section of my website.
  8. The Rat Fan Club
This group is based in Chico, California and has members worldwide. It was founded by Debbie “The Rat Lady” Ducommun. Debbie has published an excellent 36-page book, Rat Health Care, which is strongly recommended reading for you and your vet.
  9. The Ratlist “Especially for Newbies” Articles
This is a comprehensive compilation of helpful articles for people who have much to learn about pet rats.
  10. Ratlist Listserv group
This is a very active Yahoo group with over 1500 members as of November, 2004. Robyn Arthur of The Dapper Rat used to be the group moderator.
  11. Rat and Mouse Club of America
RMCA takes a stand against the practices of culling and breeding rats to show quality standards. They say it’s important that “rats don’t pay with their lives for our ribbons.” This website is an excellent resource for all sorts of information about rats.
  12. Rattie Ratz: rescue, resource, and referral
“Dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption of domestic pet rats and other small animals.” If you live in Northern California and you need another rat (New Rat Fever) this is an excellent place to adopt from. Rattie Ratz is located near Redwood City, California and they have over 100 rats in need of homes. They have state and federal nonprofit status, so donations are tax-deductible.
  13. Virginia’s Rat Page
This simply designed, yet information rich, page is a long list of links to some of the best articles about rats on the Internet. The links are categorized under headings such as breeding, diet, environment, euthanasia, health issues, and many others.
