Yosemite Valley is an urbanized environment. To find true wilderness you must venture into other parts of Yosemite National Park. The unusual view of Half Dome shown here was taken from the Sunrise Trail above Little Yosemite Valley.

It’s only a 24 mile hike from Yosemite Valley to Toulumne Meadows by way of the John Muir Trail, and there is a grand expanse of wilderness along the way. South of Toulumne Meadows there is more high country beckoning to the backpacker. You could mail yourself a resupply of food care of general delivery at the Toulumne Meadows Post Office. Then you could loop back to Yosemite Valley by heading west over Toulumne Pass and taking your choice of routes back to the Merced River.
