I have always loved to look at other people’s landscape photographs and in 1992 I decided to start taking my own. At first I only got great shots once in a while, but as time went by I achieved a higher success rate. I have sometimes gotten 10 killer shots from a 36 exposure roll of film.
I grew up in Southern California during the sixties and seventies and never imagined as a young person how many talents I would have when I grew up. I have always been a graphic artist and a writer of words, but I am now also a writer of computer code. When I was in my teens through my thirties the kind of thinking required for writing code intimidated me.
After leaving high school I found a career in healthcare that lasted 19 years. My healthcare work included teaching patients new skills. I have always loved to teach. I worked in stroke rehabilitation for 4 years, and that was the most teaching intensive job I have ever had.
I’m a life long nature lover. I go on day hikes in local nature areas, and when I go backpacking I stay out for weeks at a time. I have a strong interest in sports nutrition and plan backpacking menus by calorie count. You can check out my nutritional research on my backpacking food web site.
During 1997 and 1998 I bred pet rats. Rats are sweet and loving. Many people who like both rats and dogs say the two species have similar personalities. I have observed and written much about rats. You can read my research if you like.
I took all of these photographs, scanned them, and corrected the colors on my computer. I constructed this web site in a text editor, not with a graphical interface like Dreamweaver, FrontPage, or GoLive. I used PHP and JavaScript to create an interactive ordering page with worldwide shipping calculations. Finally, I wrote the MySQL code for maintaining a database of online transactions.
One of my computer programming books says, “You’re a computer programmer. Don’t even think about choosing the color scheme for your web site. Leave that to the graphic arts professionals.” Clearly, I break the mold by being proficient in both realms.
