Welcome to Ben’s Home Cooking. Most of the recipes presented here come from Southeast and Southwest Asia. There are also a handful of recipes from America and Europe.

I collect cookbooks, especially ones about Asian cuisines. I have found that no single cookbook tells the entire story about how to prepare each dish in a truly authentic manner. For example, when making Indian curry you should roast the spices. Few Indian cookbooks reveal this essential step. I have done my best to make each of these recipes complete in all of their directions.

When an ethnic cookbook is written, it is not uncommon for the recipes to be adapted to use ingredients that are readily available in the country where the cookbook is going to be sold. I read cookbooks with an eye to reversing this process. I’m fortunate to live in area where there are lots of immigrants, and I can find practically anything I want in their grocery stores.
